Burton

Exterior of Burton church, Westmorland

The Westmorland village of Burton lies to the west of Farleton Crags, midway between Lancaster and Kendal.

Its church dates from around 1090, and there is a list of vicars on display in the church which begins with Adam in 1180. Roger Dockwra was Vicar here between 1409-1437.

Burton church was granted by Ivo de Taillebois, Baron of Kendal to Stephen de Whitby, the first Abbot of the newly-formed Benedictine Abbey of St Mary, at York.

The dedication is to St.James, and the tower is the oldest part of the church.
